Camellias by Garden Historian Kirkland Moore

This presentation generously sponsored by Dr. Charlotte Weidenman

When: Saturday, February 7, 2026 from 9:30 AM – 10:30 AM

Description:

Kirkland Moore’s love affair with camellias began at the tender age of seven when he was taught how to propagate his favorite specimens in a neighbor’s incredible garden. He loved sharing his camellia babies with friends and family.

He continues to share his love of camellias and knowledge of their culture at the 2026 Aiken Antique Show.

You will hear the fascinating history of the genus- its origins in China, Korea and Japan- and the circumstances surrounding its arrival in Europe then America.

Kirk will share little known facts about the origins of varieties, soil and amendment suggestions and pruning.

With his self-effacing style and wit, he will also give creative suggestions for decorating with camellias.

His professors at the University of Georgia years ago lovingly called him “Camellia Boy.” After an hour with Camellia Boy you will be educated, inspired and entertained!

Tickets for this presentation are $50 and include a live one gallon camellia, a light breakfast, and admission to the Show and Sale the same day. Kirkland’s newly published book “Camellias” will be available for purchase at the presentation.
